  • Fee-Only versus Broker, Know the Difference

There is an enormous difference between a “Fee-Only” independent Advisor acting as a fiduciary and a “Broker” working for a Wirehouse or Broker/Dealer selling products. Here is a humorous but succinct video that the advisory firm “HighTower” produced that shows the stark difference between the two approaches to client service:

    Why choose us?

Although most of the visitors to our site are existing clients and their advisors, we know that occassionally we will be visited by a consumer searching for a Financial Planner with whom to work. That search should end in a favorable alliance between the advisor and the client. It can only end this way if the consumer is well prepared to discuss the personal issues that lead the consumer to seek out a professional Financial Planner. More important than even this preparation the consumer must be prepared to discuss the prospective advisor`s suitability to work with that consumer.

The CFP Board of Standards has a website. The Board is the regulatory body that governs how those professionals holding the CFP designation shall conduct their business. A CFP, Certified Financial Planner, must pass rigorous exams and take continuing education courses each year. A CFP must also maintain the highest ethical standards to retain use of the CFP mark. The website has a page devoted to helping consumers make the right choice in selecting a financial planner. It also has a comprehensive check-list.

Check it out at: http://www.cfpboard.org then click on the hyperlink in the left panel for "Search for a CFP professional".

And finally, if you are dealing with an advisor who sells securities of any kind the regulartory body of the securities industry has a web site that will enable you to find out the background, licensing, and regulatory history, including complaints and judgements, of any broker you encounter. The National Association of Securities Dealers (FINRA) site is: http://www.finra.org
